Esperanza was born on July 23, 1945, in Toppenish, Washington, to Oscar and Martha Rojas. She dedicated her life to serving others, working in social services for many years—a role she continued even after retirement, always helping those in need.

On July 31, 1963, Esperanza married the love of her life, Nestor Gerhardt, in Burley, Idaho, where they built their home and raised their family. Nestor preceded her in death.

Esperanza was a vibrant, loving woman who found joy in spending time with her grandchildren, visiting with family and friends, and sharing her love of music—especially singing and dancing. She helped raise her younger siblings in the absence of their parents and remained a constant source of strength, love, and support throughout her life.

She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Esperanza is survived by her children:

  • Nestor Gerhardt Jr. and his children Dezerae and Nestor III
  • Ruben (Melissa) Gerhardt and their children Demetre (Jade), Nicholas, and Xavier
  • Isabel Nielsen and her children Izabelle (Santiago), Abigail, and Austyn

She also leaves behind eight great-grandchildren, her five sisters: Beatrice Gerhardt, Delores Gerhardt, Tina (Alfonso) Betancourth, Irene Soto, and Vicki Rojas (Delane) Schumacher; and two brothers: Rudy Rojas and Jose Oscar (Minnie) Rojas Jr.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Nestor, daughter Sylvia Ann, grandson Dominic Gerhardt, her parents Oscar and Martha Rojas, brothers Ruben, Roy, and  Cory John Rojas, and her  very special brother-in-law George Gerhardt.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Pleasant View Cemetery in Burley, Idaho, officiated by Pastor Dan Renz and under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Cindy and all the compassionate medical staff at Fresenius Kidney Care in Twin Falls and Intermountain Health Hospice.

It saddens me to hear of Esperanza's passing. There are so many memories. She was my first boss and she taught me so much in the work world. I remember being a little scared of her because it was a new job and I didn't know what to do but she quickly became a forever friend and I always looked up to her and had an immense respect for her. She had a beautiful spirit and gave the best advice. Thank you for the friendship that lasted many years. I will miss you. Patricia Vigil

My heartfelt condolences to the entire family. Esperanza was such an amazing and incredible person! I met Esperanza over 40 years ago as she managed the Idaho Migrant Council Headstart program. My daughter was enrolled in the program and I served as a on the head started advisory council. We became fast friends, allies and advocates ! She was always one to advocate for those in need, and of course, ensuring that all of our children had an equitable and just Headstart in their educational journey. She was a wonderful role model and mentor.May she rest in eternal peace and I look forward to the day that we meet again. Marta A. Hernandez

My condolences to Nestor Jr. , Ruben, Isabel and their families for the loss of their amazing mother. I had the pleasure of knowing hope, eating her amazing cooking as a teenager and spending a lot of time hanging out at her home with my best freind Nestor Jr. when I was a kid.
You will be missed without a doubt. David Gonzales
